Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland ISLANDE
Descriptif : The University of Iceland is engaged in a joint doctoral program with the Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse III, in the field of Earth Sciences (http://midstodframhaldsnams.hi.is/joint-doctoral-programme). Three candidates have already successfully defended their Ph.D. in geochemistry through this program. The present project will lead to the first joint Ph. D. in glaciology and will strengthen further the collaboration between the two Universities. Etienne Berthier has collaborated with gg-IES since the start of his doctoral studies. Part of his Ph.D. project, based essentially on optical satellite data, focused on the extraction and analysis of glacier motion and geometry changes of Icelandic glaciers. Helgi Björnsson, the leader of gg-IES at that time, was external evaluator during Etienne's defense in Toulouse in 2005. Seven peer-reviewed articles have already been published between the two research groups and 2 are in preparation. Etienne is now one of the world leading experts in utilizing optical satellite data for glaciological studies. The collaboration of gg-IES with Etienne, which is working in close connexion with the French Space Agency (CNES) is extremely valuable for IES in general, in terms of Etienne’s top knowhow in the field and because it facilitates access to data otherwise inaccessible or too expensive.
