  • 1st phase: September 2012 - December 2012Work to be done:
    Research literature on the state of the art of the problem of processing biomass in general, and techniques of pyrolysis and thermal depolymerization in particular.
    Expected results:
    Report on the state of the art.
    2nd phase: January 2013 - June 2013
    Work to be done:
    Identification of biomass in the Midi-Pyrenees, the choice of one or more target candidates; bibliographic research of thermal and electrical properties
    setting up experiments to determine the electrical properties of targets, including the permittivity and loss tangent around the frequency 2.45 GHz
    Expected results:
    Detailed description of the experiments; bibliographic review and comparison of laboratory experience.
    3rd phase: July 2013 - October 2013
    Work to be done:
    Study of the technique of conventional thermal depolymerization
    Establishing a model of heat transfer using finite element method based multiphysics simulation software (eg COMSOL Multiphysics)
    Expected results:
    Detailed model development and validation of cases identified with literature reviews.
    4th phase: November 2013 - April 2014.
    Work to be done:
    Multiphysics simulation study of the problem of energy conversion between microwave applicators and depolymerization unit
    optimizing the conversion efficiency
    Expected results:
    Detailed report on the simulations; configuration of the optimized microwave applicator.
    5th phase: May 2014 - February 2015.
    Work to be done:
    Design of the entire applicator unit depolymerization
    Design of monitoring and control unit
    Completion of the pilot machine
    Expected results:
    Manufacture and installation of the pilot machine.
    Sixth phase: March 2015 - July 2015.
    Work to be done:
    Testing of the pilot machine with biomass types studied in phase 3 and 4
    Analysis of the operation of the machine.
    Expected results:
    Report on the outcome of the pilot machine.
    Manuscript and defense
    The manuscript will be held in parallel with Phase 6, between March and July 2015 in order to be considered by the rapporteurs in the summer of 2015. The defense will be held in autumn 2015.
